the current state of my gaming backlog: quick take #10

In my opinion, having a giant backlog is a good problem to have. For me in particular, I use my decades long back log as an opportunity for video game education. The only downside is that when trying to balance reviewing new games vs. playing old ones, a lot of games end up falling through the cracks. In 2025, I aim to balance the classics with the upcoming hits, and do justice to my backlog. Here’s the current state of my backlog as of January 2025.

2024

I got back into my normal gaming groove in 2024, but sadly, a few indies and heavy hitters alike slipped through the cracks. These games are high on my list of games to tackle within the month:

Metaphor: ReFantazio

Black Myth Wukong

Satisfactory

Balatro

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2

Frostpunk 2

Nine Sols

Hades 2 (early access)

The Plucky Squire

2023

Arguably the best year in gaming we’ve had in decades, 2023 served as a monster catalyst for my pile of shame. 2 years later, I’m still trying to catch up:

Lies of P

Starfield

Jusant

Cocoon

Baldur’s Gate 3

Super Mario Bros Wonder

Dredge

Cities Skylines 2

Classic Titles

These are games from 2022 and prior. Of course, a game released in 2022 likely isn’t considered a “classic” at this point, but it falls into a category of games that were released long enough ago for me to consider it part of my gaming “education”. This list also includes games I’ve always wanted to play but haven’t gotten around to, but hope to in 2025:

Final Fantasy VIII

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Assassin’s Creed 1-3

Hyperlight Drifter

Diablo IV

The Halo Series

Spider Man 1 & 2

Dark Souls 2 & 3

Bloodbourne
